Focusing on acquiring essential bench skills, our 8-week silver jewellery making course in Essex introduces you to a wide variety of traditional tools, processes, and materials. Designed to maximise hands-on practical time at your own dedicated jeweller’s bench, you will learn fundamental goldsmithing techniques using silver or your choice of base metals and progress toward finishing a small collection of custom pieces at your own pace.

Metals not included: Buy silver from our recommended suppliers (roughly £60 across 8 weeks) or buy copper in class to learn the exact same skills for less! Do not buy before Week 1.
What you'll make
- A small collection of finished jewellery pieces tailored to your individual progress and designs (e.g. rings, earrings, wire-based projects).
- Practice test pieces exploring various metalworking and surface textures.
Skills & Techniques
- Safe Workshop Practice: Correct health and safety procedures in a professional jewellery workshop.
- Surface Texturing: Exploring metal surfaces through embossing, hammering, etching, and stamping.
- Piercing & Sawing: Fitting saw blades and cutting precise internal and external metal designs by hand.
- Drilling & Piercing: Drilling holes in metal using a variety of specialised tools.
- Wirework & Findings: Making your own wire, wire-related jewellery, and earring wires/findings.
- Silver Soldering: Fundamental silver soldering joint techniques.
- Forming & Sizing: Measuring, sizing, and constructing rings, as well as doming and swaging metal.
- Finishing & Polishing: Finishing work to a high standard and applying final polishes.
- Sourcing & Setup: Learning how to order supplies/precious metals, plus receiving a recommended tool and supplier list to set up a workbench at home.
Note: This course is skills-focused rather than set-project-based, giving you maximum hands-on workshop time with step-by-step guidance from your tutor.

Good to know
- Course Structure: Sessions run on the same day and time each week for 2.5 hours per session (excluding Bank Holiday Mondays and half-term weeks).
- Skills-Based Focus: This course focuses on skill acquisition rather than guaranteed outcomes per session; final finished pieces depend on individual student progress.
- What to Wear: Comfortable workshop clothing, flat closed-toe shoes or boots, and long hair tied back.
- Repeat Learners: Loved the course? You’re welcome to repeat it as many times as you like to work on brand-new custom designs!
