Take your vitreous enamelling skills into three dimensions! Led by expert tutor Sara Barker, this intensive 1-day vitreous enamelling workshop transitions you from flat sheet metal to the flowing curves of spun copper bowls. Master metal preparation, enamel application on concave and convex surfaces, kiln-firing, and troubleshooting to create a striking 3D piece and decorative test samples.

What you'll make

One beautifully finished, custom vitreous enamelled 3D copper bowl.
A collection of decorative enamel test samples (ideal for turning into pendants or mini panels at home).

Skills & Techniques

Vitreous Enamelling Fundamentals: Understanding the principles of fusing glass to metal in a kiln.
Surface Preparation: Cleaning, prepping, and handling spun copper shapes for copper-to-glass adhesion.
Curved Surface Application: Applying vitreous enamel smoothly across 3D concave and convex surfaces.
Colour & Design Dynamics: Testing decorative media and designing surface patterns tailored to 3D forms.
Kiln Firing & Temperature Control: Gauging firing times, managing kiln temperatures, and reducing fire scale buildup.
Troubleshooting: Managing overfiring risks and adapting designs to kiln outcomes.
Studio & Setup Guidance: Health and safety best practices, tool selection, and advice on choosing a home kiln.

Good to know

Prerequisites & Physical Demands: Designed for students with basic vitreous enamelling experience, though methodical beginners can be accommodated. Manual dexterity is required. You will be standing at workbenches and kilns for most of the day (stools available for breaks).
Lunch: A 45-minute lunch break is included; please bring your own lunch.

Just got back from a hammered & stamped ring making workshop with Karen & I had so much fun! I dragged my fiance to who is a stay at home type of person & he absolutely loved it too & I’ve got two brand new rings! Karen is a great teacher, funny, laid back & really puts you at ease.
