Join award-winning engraver John Cook for a 2-day Jewellery Hand Engraving Workshop focusing specifically on jewellery design techniques. This intensive course covers setting up, sharpening, and polishing gravers before progressing through practice plates in bright cutting, Florentine designs, arabesque scrolls, floral patterns, wriggle cuts, and borders. Over the two days, you will build confidence in hand engraving techniques and complete a final task designing and cutting your own pendant.

All materials included: All practice copper plates, materials, pendants, handouts, and tool set use are included. Specialist tools are available to purchase on the day. Please bring a packed lunch (tea, coffee, and biscuits provided).
What you'll make
- Engraved copper practice plates featuring straight/curved lines, Celtic patterns, flower motifs, bright cutting, and Florentine designs.
- A hand-engraved pendant designed and cut during your final task using the techniques learned during the course.
Skills & Techniques
- Graver Setup & Maintenance: Setting up, sharpening, and polishing flat, round, and liner gravers.
- Tooling & Equipment Handling: Using magnification, work holding, turntables, transfer techniques, and associated engraving tools.
- Line Cutting & Patterns: Building control in cutting straight and curved lines on copper plates, progressing to Celtic patterns.
- Jewellery Decorative Cuts: Executing bright cutting, cap techniques, wriggle cuts, bright cut borders, arabesque scrolls, and floral designs.
- Florentine Finishing: Utilising liner gravers to produce traditional Florentine textured designs.
- Pendant Engraving: Incorporating learned cuts and techniques into designing and hand engraving a finished metal pendant.

Good to know
- Tutor Expertise: John Cook trained in hand push engraving in Florence, Italy, and is a recipient of the Goldsmiths Award (2025) and UK Hand Engravers Association Copperplate Design Award (2025).
- Session Schedule: 2-day weekend course running Saturday to Sunday, 10:00 am to 5:00 pm each day.
- Catering: Teas, coffee, and biscuits provided. Attendees must bring a packed lunch
