Explore the art of setting small faceted gemstones seamlessly into metal with local goldsmith Marlies White. In this full-day masterclass, you will learn to accurately drill, burr, and taper seats using a pendant motor, practicing on copper before moving on to flush setting cubic zirconias into a sterling silver pendant to take home alongside your practice plate.

What you'll make

A practice copper plate featuring test flush settings.
One finished sterling silver pendant featuring custom flush-set cubic zirconia stones.

Skills & Techniques

Pendant Motor Control: Accurately using a flex shaft/pendant motor or micromotor for precise drilling and burring.
Seat Preparation: Drilling and tapering holes in metal to the exact shape and depth required for brilliant-cut stones.
Workholding Techniques: Using Thermo-Loc to secure metal workpieces safely while setting.
Flush Setting Execution: Pushing and burnishing metal smoothly over the stone’s girdle so it sits flush with the surface.
Finishing & Polishing: Professional clean-up and polishing techniques to produce a high-end finish.
Troubleshooting: Identifying and correcting common flush setting errors and stone misalignment.

Good to know

Prerequisites & Physical Demands: Designed for students who have completed a beginners course or have prior silversmithing experience. Good hand dexterity and sharp eyesight are essential due to precise measurements.
Bring Your Own Tools (Optional): If you own a flex shaft or micromotor, you are welcome to bring it to learn on your own equipment.
Lunch & Refreshments: A lunch break is included; please bring your own lunch and any specific dietary snacks.

Just got back from a hammered & stamped ring making workshop with Karen & I had so much fun! I dragged my fiance to who is a stay at home type of person & he absolutely loved it too & I’ve got two brand new rings! Karen is a great teacher, funny, laid back & really puts you at ease. I’d recommend this to anyone looking for a day out on their own or with friends, or looking to get into jewellery making / silver / goldsmithing! I can’t wait to do another 😍
